Green Commuting: Incentivizing Bike to Work for a Sustainable Future

While it’s no surprise that biking to work rather than commuting by car is a crucial aspect of reducing carbon emissions, it comes with a multitude of other benefits. Companies can actually save money, increase productivity, lower healthcare costs, and reduce absenteeism by incentivizing their employees to bike.

Learn from these companies that have crushed Bike to Work Day:

  • Clif Bar & Company: Clif Bar incentivizes cycling to employees by offering up to $765 a year in rewards for commuting by bike, $500 toward a bike every six years, and $350 annually to cover race entry fees.

  • Salesforce: Salesforce offers a free on-site bike share operated by Zagster that employees can use to ride during work hours or borrow over the weekend. In previous years, employees could log their commute miles through the app Movecoach as part of the company’s 4 Million Miles Challenge to earn prizes.

  • ViaSat: This satellite broadband company encourages its employees to bike and get active with cash reimbursement or gear rewards for those who exercise at least eight times a month. They also offer an on-site health clinic and a campus bike fleet of more than 100 beach cruisers.

  • Patagonia: Patagonia offers its employees $2 for each trip they make to or from work by bike, and loaner bikes and gear are available for travel between company buildings or around town. Patagonia encourages Bike to Work Week with free breakfast, repairs, and prizes.

Firecrown works with large organizations to drive significant emission reductions across their operations and scopes. We believe in solutions that lessen our collective dependence on cars and fossil fuels which is why we advocate for biking as a daily solution that should be integrated into a company’s core mission.

One person can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 3,000 pounds a year by simply riding a bike to work instead of driving. We encourage employers to incentivize their workforces to join in on this movement — to safeguard the planet, promote healthy habits, and create a better future for all.
